Dance Horizons presents the first digitally produced edition of Innovations Dance Platform.

On the 28th of November audience members should be taking their seats at The Studio but due to the ongoing pandemic live theatre in Scotland is not possible and that all our live events this year have had to be cancelled. However, our dedicated production team have pulled together alongside our artists and companies to produce a programme of Scottish grown dance work for a very special digital edition.

Dance Horizons first established Innovations in 2014 and has produced over 7 editions of the platform, presenting works by more than 17 choreographers from across the UK and overseas. Innovations is one of the UK's largest, independent dance platforms and continues to support and champion contemporary dance work by artists at all stages of their professional career.

Truth or dance  \\ amy & saya

Truth or Dance explores the lengths that people will go to avoid the truth. How important is the truth? Is it easier to dance around it? The piece plays with ideas of trust, distortion and fabrication and is a blend of contemporary dance and partner acrobatics.

Truth or Dance is a new work for Amy and Saya in 2020, it began with a residency at Citymoves, Aberdeen in February and has recently been developed with another residency at Dancebase, Edinburgh.

Amy and Saya have been creating and performing together since 2017. They predominantly train as an acrobatic duo but are heavily influenced by a background in dance and also perform doubles aerial from time to time. Amy and Saya have performed at a wide variety of cabarets, corporate events and contemporary festivals. Based in Edinburgh, the duo have performed all over Scotland as well as abroad and recently, online. They are interested in making work that says something and previous pieces have covered themes such as mental health and LGBTQ+ pride.

Inspired by Tim Burton’s 1988 classic ‘Beetlejuice’, Unearthed delve into the netherworld to explore the beloved character and his quirky behaviour through high energy movement and phrasing. The piece takes you on a journey from meeting Beetlejuice following the twists and turns of the manipulative behaviours portrayed by the character to a familiar soundtrack of Beetlejuice classics.

Unearthed Dance Company is the name given to the choreographic practice of Hannah Mason. Created in 2016 and now coming into their 4th year, Unearthed create high energy, compelling works with a keen interest in social and cultural issues within society and exploring human behaviours.

Consisting of professional dancers and dancers in their final years of training, Unearthed work collaboratively together to create works which have been performed to audiences across the UK at various platforms and festivals; including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017, 2018, 2019, Go Dance Glasgow and Innovations Contemporary Dance Platform (2016, 2018, 2019).

Hannah and the company are passionate about exploring their choreographic practice and have been the recipient of the Merchant Company Enterprise Award (2016) and funding from The Peter Darrell Trust.

a fragile geography: PLACES  \\ Daniel Navarro Lorenzo

What does nature mean to us? What do we remember of nature in the urban landscapes of streets, museums and parks? What will we remember in the future when all nature is artificial? This new dance piece will follow the music into dreams of the synthetic environment. Based on the memory of what nature means to us and what will be remembered in this future fictitious world, where society has tried to recreate a synthetic and artificial nature.

My inspiration for the piece comes from living in Singapore for the past three years where there are a lot of 'recreations' of nature, and the superficiality that comes with that. I could see on the streets, museums, or parks that have tried to 'fake' nature in this increasingly urban city. It will be based on the feelings of the loneliness and the darker side of human beings. A character who tries to find nature to become like those who lived before him/her. Just like it is for me, music will be what guides the character through this journey and is what will make him/ her dream and believe in his imaginary world.

FRAYED  \\ SHAUN STICKLAND                      SCREEN DANCE WORK

Frayed is a current work in progress by Shaun
Stickland. This short film investigates how when mental
health is ignored, it can manifest into something truly
all-consuming and isolating.

The creative process creating this piece has been eye
opening for me in so many ways. As someone who has
suffered with mental illness, I know all too well how
alone someone can feel. If you feel like you might need to chat to someone, please look for local resources available to you.
Shaun Stickland is a UK based contemporary dance artist and choreographer based in Aberdeen. Shaun has a keen
interest in fusing various dance and improvisation techniques whilst maintaining a strong narrative throughout his practice. Shaun is extremely passionate about exploring the bridge between movement and mental well-being.

“You know that way where you go to start a new job, experience, whatever? And you know how sometimes that feeling of fear, lack of comprehension, or just self-doubt. I’m sure we can relate to sometime where we’ve felt a bit
broken? Almost like someone has torn us down – and we begin to question ourselves? Yeah, I can relate too. Most likely will the person who’s sitting beside you, or
your neighbour across the street.

My point is – this is something we
all have in common… But it is not ok! Our broken pieces form who we are today. And we are WONDERFUL! And I want us to realise that.” I wanted to create a piece that is
relatable to everyone. Something that’s transferable and can be perceived individually. Most importantly, a message that can connect – a message only you will understand. We go through masses of obstacles and hurdles in our lives, and sometimes we forget our purpose along the way. Our
inner-devalue will always be our biggest tackle.

This work has been commissioned for Innovations 2020
– and I really hope you enjoy it!
